Manchester United beat Burnley 3-1, their most significant win under new manager Ralf Rangnick. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fourth goal in his past five Premier League outings.

Ronaldo scored United's third goal in the first half, tapping into an empty net after Scott McTominay's long-range attempt was deflected onto the post by Burnley goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey in the 35th minute.

United had set themselves up for victory with a curling shot from the outskirts of the area from McTominay and an own-goal by Ben Mee to bounce back from a dismal performance in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle on Monday.

Aaron Lennon finished a fascinating first half by reducing the gap with his first goal since September 2018 in the 38th minute with a strike into the far corner.

By that point, United had done enough to record their third win in four league games under Rangnick, moving them ahead of Tottenham into sixth place.

United is 19 points behind Manchester City despite having played two fewer games.

Burnley hadn't played since December 12, when matches against Watford, Aston Villa, and Everton were postponed due to COVID-19 outbreaks in opponents' squads.

It was Ronaldo's 14th goal for United in all competitions this season.
